Be a Holiday Hottie

NEWS FLASH… the holidays are just around the corner.  Yes, it is that time of year when most people decide to write off any type of exercise, and replace it with Americas favorite pass time, EATING.

Now if you are someone who doesn’t workout, and has just surrendered to wearing baggy clothes for the winter, than please keep reading.  On the other hand, if you are someone who does train year round, and are sick of falling off the wagon during the holidays, then this will be useful for you as well.

Now during the holidays, you can always count on one thing….Holdiday Parties!  I am sure we have all been to one at some time or another.  Whether it is a work party, school party, or just one with family and friends, I am sure we will all end up at one this season.

If you have been to a holiday party, you also know that there are always a couple people, guys or girls doesn’t matter, but they are in GREAT SHAPE.  While most people are covering up, they are strutting their stuff.  If you don’t know what I am talking about, then maybe you are that person at your party.  However if you’re not then the rest of this is for YOU.

Whether you want to admit it or not, everyone wants to be fit.  You can deny it out loud, but in your head you want to be fit.  I have yet to meet the person that says “I love getting winded walking up 3 steps” or “Mu Mu’s are my favorite thing to wear.”  Of course that’s not true.  People just need to understand that it is attainable, but unfortunately It Ain’t Easy.

Just because it is winter time, does not mean that you should give up on your body or your health.  It is just as important to exercise and stay fit during the winter.  Assuming that you will most likely indulge a little more than normal during the winter season, doesn’t it make sense that you should burn some extra calories as well?

Why be like everyone else and “Wait til the New Year?”  The way I see it, at the end of December you can either be 2 months older, 10 pounds heavier, and start a program in a deeper hole, OR you can be 2 months older, 10 pounds lighter, and well on your way to hitting your goals by summer.  Here are a couple of tips that help you get through the holidays with out the extra baggage.

1.  Avoid the dessert table.

Every party has a “dessert table” that is LOADED with cookies, fudge, and all kinds of other sugar and fat filled treats.  Adding this to a night of other bad food and probably drinking is a recipe for a spare tire.  Make smart decisions!

2.  Be careful with holiday drinks

Egg Nog is a favorite holiday drink of many people, but also FULL of calories.  You always want to avoid drinking your calories whenever possible.  Apple cider is another one that is full of sugar, be conscious of drinks like theses.

3.  Get the temptation out of the house.

If you are hosting a party, then you will no doubt have some of the sugary sweet stuff that we are talking about.  This is fine, but at the end of party get in the habit of sending it home with your guests.  If it’s not in the house you can’t eat it.

4.  Go easy on the extras

When it comes to Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, a lot of the food is not all that bad, it is the extras we add to them.  Go easy on the gravy, butter, whip cream, sour cream, cream cheese, and anything I missed when it comes to your holiday feast.

5.  KEEP TRAINING!!!!!!!

Don’t use the holidays as an excuse to stop or not to start a fitness program.  You still have an hour in your day to keep yourself healthy.  Besides, who wants to be sick this time of year?  Being active is a great way to keep up your immune system this time of year.

Good luck this holiday season, follow these tips, and watch what happens.  Weight gain is NOT inevitable during the Holidays, you are in control!!!
