Death of the Corporate Gym

Hey everyone, Aaron here! So I have a little issue that I need to get off my chest.

Ok so here goes, I walked into 24hourfitness today to get a quick workout and without fail every single piece of cardio equipment was filled up!! I mean the gym easily had over 100 pieces of cardio equipment, and not one was available. Now you might be thinking well whats wrong with that, that means people are trying to get in shape for new years right? WRONG! The notion that doing cardio for hours on end to get in shape is like saying I’m going to dig to china with a spoon!

And the part that I love most is the fact that the sales people at 24hourfitness and all corporate gyms for that matter tell you what you want to hear to sell a membership. Matter of fact I over heard a sales guy tell a lady ” Oh you want to lose some weight awesome, We have stair climbers and state of the art treadmills, and blah blah blah!”  I am sure that to this woman she was hearing exactly what she wanted to hear.  Why you ask?  because cardio is easy!  Now let me qualify that statement, cardio is easier than training with weights at a high intensity, and doing the things that ACTUALLY get you in shape. All, that nonsense that they feed the general public all the time about “All you need is state of the art equipment, and the weight will just fall off.”  Now think about it this way, if you walk into a hospital with the best equipment money can buy, would you be able to operate on yourself? Not likely.  Well,  just because you have a plastic card and walk into a corporate gym with a bunch of fancy machines DOES NOT mean you will get results!

I can not say enough how important it is for anyone looking to get in the best shape of their life to pick up some weights!! Yes ladies, that includes you as well. If you want to be ” lean and toned” it is imperative you lift weights. Anyone who tells you that lifting weights will make you big and bulky are either flat out lying to you, or trying to sell you a gym membership.

Do not fall victim this year and buy a membership to a corporate gym with the hopes that THIS year you will magically get in shape doing the exact same thing you did last year and failed. Get with a coach and gym that has a track record of delivering results, and start this year off with a plan. Join a program that can be tailored to your goals! Let this year be the year you actually start a program than can GUARANTEE RESULTS!

Best of luck in 2011
