Genetics or Excuse?

Being in the health and fitness industry for as long as I have, I’ve heard it all as to why people do not look and feel the way they want. As of late though, one reason seems to be getting brought up over and over, and it has to do with genetics and body types. Now, if you didn’t already know there are three basic body types, the Ectomorph, Mesomorph, and the Endomorph.

Now let’s move the part where I give you my opinion on this whole thing.  Let’s just say it is all true, Ectomorphs are doomed to be skinny, Mesomorphs are the athletes, and Endoomorphs are doomed to be fat.  Here is my problem with this.  Let’s think for a second about a great athlete that you knew in high school (doesn’t matter who just pick one).  He was the star baseball, football, basketball player, and had a physique that everyone would love to have.  Now fast forward to the 10 year reunion.  My bet is that he probably doesn’t look like that any more.  Why not?  If your body type cannot change, then he should have been a physical specimen for the rest of his life.  Even though he may have had a body type that lent itself to a lean muscular physique, does not mean that he gets to eat pizza and drink beer and still look that way.  He stopped playing sports, and being active, and it all caught up with him.

Hopefully you see where I am going with this.  Even if you are predisposed to a certain body type, it does not mean that you are powerless to have the body you want.  In the same way that fat people become lean, and lean people become fat bodies can change.  If this statement is true, then how can anyone be stuck where they are?  What has happened, is that people hear about these body types, and they become an excuse as to why they don’t look the way they want.  “Well I would have a six pack, but I’m an endomorph and it just isn’t possible.”  BULLSHIT! You are just not willing to put in the work that will get you to that six pack. This goes back to one of my favorite conversations that I have with people about what they can and can’t do about their physiques.  I have come up with an extremely easy way to get this point across.  In fact it is something that Aaron and I say to people all the time.  “10 in 10 out”  What this means is if you want to look like a 10, you have to put in a 10 effort.  The problem is that EVERYONE wants to look like a 10, but with a 5 effort.  Sorry, it don’t work that way.

If you are one of the ones that say you have bad genetics, then I have news for you YOU BETTER DEVELOP THE EXERCISE GENE! I am never surprised anymore these days when I hear people make excuses as to why they don’t look the way they want or don’t have what they want. It is very easy to point the finger and blame others or bad genetics as to why you are unhappy and it is not so easy to take a long hard look in the mirror at yourself and take 100% of the blame.
